Hi, I'm Chloe!

Welcome to my Capstone Project! The central question I will be exploring is “in what ways is it important for young women to have strong female role models?” I am personally interested in exploring this question because I have had the privilege to be surrounded by strong females throughout my whole life. This has led me to take on many leadership roles throughout college, making me the strong, confident woman I am today. My strong female role models have empowered me. Without this guidance and drive, I don’t think I would be the person I am today.

 

Each leadership role I have taken makes me feel more empowered and allows me to continue to empower others. These roles include sorority president my freshman year, female sleep-away camp assistant group leader, working at Jewish Federations of North America in the Women’s Philanthropy department, and being co-founder and Vice President of Women in Law. I hope that I will become, maybe even am, a strong female role model to others. (Check out my personal narrative page for more information about these roles!) I can attribute these accomplishments to the strong female role models I have had throughout my life.

 

This is actually what I wrote my personal statement for law school about. My personal statement is included here. I could have written about anything but I chose this topic because being a strong female on campus and in my community has made me who I am today. But what does being a strong female mean? How does one become a strong female role model? Am I a strong female role model to others? All of these questions drive my project.

 

To help shed light on this important question, I want to use research to show others why it is important for young females to have strong female role models. I will do this through research based on studies and by showing how female models in the media affect young females. I do not think this central question can be answered without discussing the media. There are both positive and negative models for young girls, and it is up to society to rid the media of the negative ones. I want to actively help young women get in contact with potential female role models, which will be the last page of the website. I will also be interviewing my own female role models to learn more about their role models and how having them have influenced their lives and careers.

 

Currently, much of the conversation about female role models is about how young girls are exposed to both positive and negative role models every day: strong, encouraging mothers and some celebrities who use their sex appeal to be popular. Young females are being torn between these two different kinds of models. As research shows, it is important for a young female to find a role model she identifies with, so that this relationship can become less superficial and more genuine and real. This in turn will hopefully lead to real changes for the young female. My hope in this project is to further emphasize the positive effects that female role models can have on younger females.
